Peach producers from Pela and Imatia areas blocked northern Greece roads, specifically the highway from Thessaloniki to Veria and Kozani. The six barricades on Egnatia highway force the drivers take roundabout roads.
The agricultural tractors are located on the 66th kilometer of the old Thessaloniki-Veria highway on the Makrohorio Bridge, and on the Egnatia national road at the Kulura and Veria exits. Another 100 tractors are gathered at the Melisia and Ianica exits.
A meeting that is about to take place today afternoon between the experts from the Agricultural ministry and representatives of the peach producers will decide if the barricades are going to stay on the roads. The producers are insisting that the government applies measures regarding the determining the compensation-price of unsold goods.
Minister Spiros Hadzigakis informed the representatives that a special committee has been formed to deal with the issue and the results are most likely going to be announced today. It is embedded that the unsold quantities are determined as being of low quality and compensated for by the Organization for Greek agricultural insurances, and others, by forming an end-price of minimum 20 cent per kilogram.
