An announcement was made by people from the water-supply service that, water supplies are far insufficient in the Greek capital, which imposes the introduction of different measure, including the raise of water prices towards the end of spring. Despite the fall rains during September and October, not much of the water has gotten into the Athenian reservoirs, where the there are only 9,9 million cubic meters right now. This is only half of its average level during the past 3 years. This year’s September and October were rainier than last years’, but because the months before that were too dry, the water storage basins didn’t fill up.
According to a statistic from the water supply services, the water consumption increases with 10% every year, this is why they propose urgent measures for restricting water consumption. Understandably, the first one is to increase water prices, which will most likely happen towards the end of next spring. Also, they offer that watering agricultural plantations with water, which has gone through biological treatment, should be allowed. Hydrologists warn that Athens is facing another mild and rainless winter.
