Bulgaria joined the world news because of the riots caused by anarchists in Athens. After last night’s commotions in the center of the city, the police arrested a 17 year old Bulgarian boy and two Greeks – 23 and 29 years old, who were throwing “Molotov” cocktails and stones at the authorities. The police also arrested 3 more Greeks – 30, 27, and 23 years old, one 16 year old Albanian, and one 21 years old Syrian, who burnt the Greek flag on the central boulevard “Akademias,” which is right next to the parliament. The riots were followed by few peaceful processions by high school and university students, and union figures who demonstrated during the day in the Greek capitol.
The police use once more tear gas in order to scatter the groups of anarchists, who at different moments were attacking different randomly. The vandals wanted to burn the Christmas tree again on the central square “Constitution” but the police managed to make a live chain around it on time so it didn’t happen. The anarchists already burnt the tree once before but the Athens municipality put up a new one. Few cars were burnt and destroyed in the center of the city, including a bullet proof Jeep, which was for money transport. Big boulevards in Athens remained closed during the whole afternoon.
A big battle between anarchists and the police took place around the department of law of the Athenian University, where around 100 demonstrators occupied it and started throwing stones and bats at the police from the windows. Other anarchists barricaded streets with garbage cans and turned upside down cars and started throwing “Molotov” cocktails at the police. The authorities were throwing back tear and poisonous gas. The situation in the center calmed down around midnight.
