A scene fit for any film dedicated to Pearl Harbor was played yesterday in the Southern waters of the Aegean Sea, where 16 Turkish fighter planes had a drill. In the early afternoon around 03:00 pm the fighter planes separated from the rest, headed North and demonstrated ostensible swoops over the Greek island Farmakonisos. The citizens of the island explain that the planes were flying not more than 150 meters from the ground.
10 minutes later two Greek fighter planes F16 joined the action, which after localizing the Turkish planes, traced and made them leave the Greek air space. According to Greece all 16 planes, which were part of the drill, entered the Greek air space 11 times and at least 8 of them were armed.
Yesterdays accident was not the first one to happen because in the last few weeks citizens of Farmakonisos witness ostensible air skills competitions between Turkish and Greek military pilots. The Turkish media explains the frequent entry of Turkish planes in Greek air space with the frequent entry of Greek fisher boats in Turkish water in this part of the Aegean. The Greek media believes though, that the Turks react this way because of the Greek drill “Brave Shooter,” which took place not too long ago.
