In order for the names of former Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitzotakis and minister of foreign affairs Dora Bakoyanni not to be involved in the scandal of the Cretan monastery Toplou, the inspectorate of the state department in the Ministry of Economics interfered in the case, says Elefterios Tipos newspaper. The director of the institution Konstantinos Kalimeriakis, who according to locals is Cretan and is a political friend of the Mitzotakis family, has returned the report to the economic inspector Emanuel Hristodoulakis. He made it clear that the report should be rewritten and the names of the former Prime Minister and his daughter – the minister of foreign affairs should not be included.
The Cretan Toplou monastery story reminds of the Vatopedi monastery and is very interesting from political point of view. The difference is that a legal investigation has started and soon the final report will come out, in which the losses of the Greek State run into millions of Euros.
It is about renting 26 000 acres of land, which the monastery claims it owns. Through the mediation of the “Virgin Mary Akrotiani” foundation the monastery has rented land to the British Loyalward Ltd. Company for tourist activities for a period of 80 years. The report of the investigator, who is responsible for Crete Island notes that the Toplou monastery used the foundation as a cover in order to be able to transfer the region Kavos Sideros land to the British company by using suspicious legal procedures.
It is reminded that the investigator’s report claims that Konstantinos Mitzotakis, his daughter Dora Bakoyanni and other members of New Democracy Party have visited the monastery before the decision to give it to the British company was made. It is also mentioned that a “very close friend” of the former Prime Minister is part of Loyalward Ltd. Company.
The “Virgin Mary Akrotiani” foundation was founded during Konstantinos Mitzotakis’ government and the inspection order was given after the legal accusation that the tender was previously arranged, in which three firms participated. The report of the economic inspector of Crete also mentions Mr. Mitzotakis and Mrs. Bakoyanni’s visits.
The department of the Ministry of Economy and Finance is trying to wipe out those visits. The Cretan economic inspector Emanuel Hristodoulakis is not willing to accept the intervention of the Ministry.
