The Association of the Muslims in Greece asked from the government to fulfill its pre-elections promise and to finally build the first mosque in Athens. In an official letter to the ministers of internal affairs Prokopsis Pavlopoulos and of education Aris Spiliotopoulos, the president of the association Naim Elgadour called upon them to put an end to the to the postponement of the temple’s construction. “Due to the lack of care from the Greek government, the Muslims are forced to pray in unofficial rooms created by themselves,” says in his letter Naim Elgadour and he also claims that situation, which is created does not help the relations between Greece and its Muslim citizens.
The Muslim community repines at the ministry of education and religions because for the second time, it is losing important documents, which are part of the construction plans and by doing this, it slows the building process on purpose. The Muslim temple was supposed to be built in the Eleonas region on the place of the former navy base, which was given by the Ministry of Defense for that purpose. The government did not manage to provide the necessary 5 million Euros for its moving. Athens is also a city, which does not have a Muslim cemetery. The Greek Orthodox Church has provided an area in the Shito region, but this construction hasn’t reached far. The Muslims are forced to travel to Komotini in Northern Greece in order to bury their relatives.
