The Sunday edition of Kathemerini newspaper says that the management of the Greek police is planning to directly include the anti-terrorism Special Forces in the protection of potential targets of terrorist organizations. The frequent attacks against police stations – three for only one month in Goudy, Exarhia, and the last one in Koridalos – are a big worry for employees of the Chief Direction of the Greek police. The icing on top was the new organization “Revolutionary Sect,” which clearly declared war to the police.
According to experts, the new organization is part of the already known “Revolutionary Fight” but it is more brutal, daring and thirsty for blood – facts, which are increasing the anxiety of the police management. At the same time, psychologists who are analyzing the acts of the terrorists claim that they are young people without experience in armed attacks and are not so skilful when it comes to shooting. “If the police succeed in immediately answering an armed attack, then the attackers will make enough mistakes and their capture will be a question of time,” says one commando from the anti-terrorist forces for Kathemerini newspaper. They already made a mistake during their attack against the police station in Koridalos. When moving out, they were shooting in the air with the machine-gun instead of keeping up with the shooting as a guarantee for their withdrawal from the crime scene – a basic rule in every terrorist organization.
Greek police director Vasilis Tziatouras is considering relocating the commandos from the anti-terrorist Special Forces to different police stations around Athens, which are believed to be future targets of the terrorists. The commandos will be armed with snipers and night vision glasses and will have an order to shoot “at meat” in case of a terrorist attack in the region, for which they are responsible. Due to the fact that the commandos cannot cover all police stations in Athens, the police stations will be evaluated on a “vulnerability” basis when under attack, this way the Special Forces will focus on the chosen ones.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Internal Affairs is considering installing CCTV cameras around the police stations. This idea was rejected before some time by the Personal Data Protection Services as anti-constitutional. Right now because of the terrorist threats and attacks, the idea is again on the table. A group of anti-terrorist experts from the British Scotland Yard will come to Athens next week, in order to research the situation and to advise how the Greek police should be reorganized in a way to be more effective and to be able to respond to the terrorists’ challenge. The Greek anti-terrorists are convinced that they are facing new series of attacks with Molotov cocktails and weapons.
