New corruption case shook the Greek Orthodox Church and outraged the Greek community as a whole. The Holy Synod officially announced that ?13 million vanished from the fund of the church charity organization “Solidarity.” So this means that it is not just a rumor but a proven fact. The money was intended for a humanitarian help in Iraq but never got there. With most of it - ?5.8 million, they had to buy chickens, which they had to send to the Persian country but this never happened. Including the interest rate, the amount for the chickens is now ?6.8 million.

There are some unpaid but spent amounts in few other projects. One of them is the “Faros” project, which is developed together with the patriarchy in Alexandria. Another part of the money has been gathered by contributors after the devastating tsunami in Indonesia in 2004. The money had to help build a professional education school in the Northern part of Sumatra Island but until this day, not even the first sod is made. Many of the contributors have started legal procedures against the church organization.

A smaller black hole of ?2 million is discovered in the accounting of another church organization – “Simean.”
