Some of the biggest names in the movie industry, among which are the script writers of Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, 21 Grams, Babel, American Beauty and The Hours will discuss their works from September 6th until 8th in Athens. This was announced today by the president of the European screenwriter guild, Christina Callas. Together with the Greek cinema center and the Audio Visual Arts Institute, the guild has organized the event, which is financed by the Ministries of Culture and Tourism in Greece.
“Cinema is the most powerful advertising medium for a country and the US has found out about this long time ago. This is why the biggest part of the world audio visual production has America’s name on it. In the globalized world, which we live in, we all have identities – nationalistic and American,” said in front of journalists Christina Callas. The Greek ministries of culture and tourism have understood that and this is why they are sponsoring the event.
As a contrast to the 20th century, when the artistic world was focused in the field of arts, the 21st century is defined by many as the century of content. The Congress will work under the slogan “Globalization and multi-culture” and will enfold all problems, which screenwriters are facing – copyrights, piracy, financing the work of screenwriters, the difference between writers and screenwriters, the emancipation of screenwriters from directors, the change, which internet brings in movie-making. There will also be many classes.
The event will bring for the first time on one table screenwriters from Europe, USA, Canada, and Australia. What are the names? David Simon - author of The Wire and Generation Kill, Shonda Rhimes – her signature stands under Grey’s Anatomy, J. J. Abrams – author of Lost, Guillermo Arriaga – famous for 21 Grams and Babel, David Mamet, who we know from House of Games, The Verdict, Wag the Dog, Alan Bole – author of American Beauty and many more others.
