Alexander the Great was declared to be the greatest Greek of all times by 127 000 Greek viewers, who voted for him through the SKAI program “Greatest Greeks.” Second is the doctor Giorgios Papanikolaou, who discovered new horizons in medicine with his researches on endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterus). He created the Pap test, which diagnoses uterus cancer at the earliest stage, and many other cellular diseases, which affect the woman’s reproductive organs. Third place was given to Theodoros Kolokotronis – the leader of the Greek freedom fight in 1821.

For the final ten, the Greek viewers voted for people, who have influenced the country’s course of history with their achievements – politicians, philosophers, leaders. Among them are the names of Konstantinos Karamanlis, Socrates, Aristotle, Elefterios Venizelos, Yoannis Kapodistrias, Plato, and Pericles.

Alexander the Great has lived 23 centuries ago and until this day, many nations claim that this hero belongs to them. Alexander was a student of Aristotle for three years, who taught him rhetoric, literature, natural sciences, medicine and philosophy. When he was 20 years old, Alexander inherited the throne of Ancient Macedonia and with his army he went on a crusade against the Persians, which took him to the depths of the Asian continent.

Alexander the Great died on June 13th 323 B.C., when he was 33 years old, because he caught malaria and had fever for a very long time. While the viewers of the program were voting, the SKAI studio became the host of a wild discussion between scientists, journalists and experts, who were passionately defending their candidates.

250 Greeks and foreigners from the art, science, political and TV field affected the vote of the viewers for declaring the Greatest Greek of all times. “TV can offer knowledge and entertainment,” said Yannis Alafouzos – president and executive director of SKAI.

He stressed that in Greece there is a misunderstanding that the TV is corrupted and he noted that the Greek community does not find the TV representative. Because of this, Yannis Alafouzos explained that there is a big problem concerning the TV viewer polls, because “only people who sit and watch TV for many hours are participating in viewer reporting and they are people who do not have a quality relationship television.”
