The Greek scientist group VAN published an analysis on the website of the American University Cornell, which forecasts a stong earthquake in the region around the Greek capital between Korinthos and Evea Island (the region circled in red on the map). Behind this analysis are the names of seismologists Panayotos Varotzos, Kesaras Alexopoulos and Konstantinos Nomikos, who bearers of few scientific distinctions, among which is the award of the “Onassis” foundation.

For few years, the scientists have been giving their analysis, which usually are tens of pages, to the American university Cornell and more specifically to the Statistical Mechanics department. After checking the credibility of the information, the university published it on its website, where it could be seen since April 19th.

All three scientists avoid giving public statements, and when this is inevitable, they always stress that the VAN program is at a research stage and its conclusions should not bring panic among the population. The three seismologists very accurately predicted the quake in Leonidio village, Arkadia region on Peloponnese on January 6th 2008. Back then, the only thing they were not correct about was the magnitude of the quake. They were warning about a 6 scale but the final shake was 6.5 on Richter.

The method of the three seismologists is based on a complicated mathematical processing of statistical electromagnetic wave data, which are radiated from known seismic focuses. Based on their method, since March 28th they are detecting signals on the red marked region, which predict a danger of a strong earthquake of about 6 point on Richter. The rest of the Greek seismologists do not share the VAN method.
