Anniversary of the fall of Constantinople – Muslims against Christians in the center of Athens

The Athens’ Police Department and the forces against mass street riots are fully ready for action because of the appointed for today two demonstrations in the center of the city. Starting at 06:00pm today is a protest procession, which organized by the Muslim society in the Greek capital, who want punishment for the police officer who desecrated the pages of the Koran. At the same hour and the same place the extreme right-wingers are organizing a memorial procession for the 556th anniversary of the falling of Constantinople and it’s conquering by the army of the Ottoman Empire.  


Representatives of various Muslim organizations are assuring that they will provide their own security for their procession in order to avoid any kind of provocations and incidents. Due to the tense situation the Minister of internal affairs Prokopis Pavlopoulos undertook the initiative and spoke on the phone to representatives of the political parties and the anti-racist organizations and appealed for self-control in order for incidents to be avoided. The minister also took responsibility for the future days to meet representatives of the Muslim societies and to discuss the matter of the construction of a mosque and a Muslim cemetery in Athens.


The evening release the “Elefterotipia” newspaper published a report from a church in Athens, where food and clothes for illegal immigrants are being collected and where on the ground floor, the priest let the immigrants sleep. Few evenings ago, the church was surrounded by extreme right-winger fanatics who were screaming racist slogans and threatening journalists and politicians with kidnapping and fights. According to “Elefterotipia” the police was close by and was observing everything without taking any actions.
