Happy ending for the air adventure of the 95 passengers and 12 crew members of the Olympic Airlines Airbus A-340, which was flying from Athens to New York. The plane departed this morning at 11:26AM from the international airport in Athens Elefterios Venizalos. About an hour after the departure, while it was in Croatian air space, on the control panel the pilot noticed a fire signal for one of the engines.
Even though no one could see smoke or fire, the pilot reported the incident to the Elefterios Venizelos air traffic controllers, who told him to return to the Athenian airport. The airplane released the excess gasoline in the air and returned back to Athens. The airport personnel were ready for an emergency landing but the Airbus A-340 landed without a problem at 01:46PM.
The Olympic Airlines technical experts checked the airplane right away and they assured that there was not fire. According to them, there was a short circuit in one of the control device connections, which resulted in the false fire signal. The technicians are fixing the problem and the passengers will be transferred to another plane, which will take them to New York.
