Two of the ravishers involved in Periklis Panagopoulos, the owner of Super Fast Ferries, kidnap from the beginning of January were revealed. After receiving a solid ransom, the kidnappers set the 74-year old ship owner free. Besides identifying the genetic material from the criminals, the police have found two cell phones in a prison, which have been used during the kidnap.
Wright after the revealing, the Minister of Justice Nikos Dendias demanded from the prime-minister Kostas Karamanlis to summon the National Judicial Council. The genetic material retrieved from objects used during the kidnap and the setting free belongs to Apostolos Petrakis and Haralambos Mustakas.
Petrakis DNA was taken from the tape sent to Mr. Panagopoulos wife as a proof that he is alive. Mustakas DNA came from Panagopoulos shoe. According to the indictment, Petrakis and Mustakas are two of the four that took part in the abduction.
The finger prints of the other two were retrieved from the house of Apostolos Petrakis, where weapons have been also found. The police investigation will continue until more evidence is found so that the whole story can be “put” together, and until the hideaway and the ransom money are also found.
The National Judicial Council will meet for the first time since its creation and will discuss the hot topic of cell phone still entering prisons despite the prohibition. During the last couple of weeks 214 cell phones have been found in Greek prisons. After the prisoner Paleokostas escaped prison with a helicopter, there was a decision to place in prisons a system that deactivates cell phones, which, however, “tripped” over research results claiming that the system has dangerous emanation.
The Ministry of Justice has decided to launch for the first time a project, placing devices that can detect cell phones in three Greek prisons. This is an effective system, as is claimed by Minister Dendias, and it will be implied in all prisons.
