The Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias has sent a letter to the UN general secretary Ban Ki-moon, in which he insists that the closed city Famagusta should be returned to its owners. As announced by the Cyprian radio RIK, president Christofias has asked from the UN to send a group of experts to the famous city, who will prepare everything for its return. He required the opening and restoration of the closed neighborhood Varosha, so that it could be suitable for living in again. According to Dimitris Chrostofias there are legal grounds for the opening of Famagusta and this is the High Level Agreement from 1979, which recommends it, without excluding Famagusta and Varosha from the negotiations package of the Cyprian problem.
Famagusta is the most famous Cyprian city till current days. After the Turkish invasion in 1974 it remains in the northern Turkish part of the island. Until that point he luxurious neighborhood Varosha was filled with Ciprian-Greeks, who left in panic of the coming Turkish army. Today, technically the city is under the guardianship of the UN but practically it is governed by the Turkish army. Moving around in it is very limited and going inside old houses is forbidden.
The UN spokesman Jose Diaz said for radio RIK that they are expecting to start moving out of Cyprus in October, because of the direct negotiations for the unification of the island. Diaz also said that the leaders of both communities Dimitris Christofias and Mehmed Ali Talat will start discussing once again the closed topics, so that they can finally agree on the details. The spokesman also said that the UN is expecting the island to be united until the end of this year. Though, he believes that keeping any deadlines is a script, which will lead to failure.
