The tension in Gramatiko village near Athens is continuing today, because its citizens are protesting against the construction of a landfill. The Special Forces have assumed their positions around the Black Mountain region. Reinforcements have left Athens, because the locals are resisting the construction of the landfill.
The riots started yesterday, when the protesters did not allow the construction workers to start working on the landfill. The workers then called the police, which was greeted by stone rain. In order to spread the demonstrators, the police threw poisonous gas. Four people were arrested and another four policemen were injured. One of the arrested locals was driving his car and had hit a policeman with it. The other three arrested had set up fires around the village.
The local citizens are determined not to allow the construction of the landfill and they will seek for help from the local prosecutor. Athens mayor Nikita Kaklamanis is characterizing the reaction of the Gramatiko village citizens as exaggerating and unacceptable.
