North Node challenges us out of the comfort of the South Node

In two subsequent articles I will focus on the lunar nodes in the horoscope - South and North. One of my first articles is also dedicated to them and my personal opinion is that they should be placed at the outset in the interpretation of every horoscope. Their importance stems from the astronomical reality behind them. Over time I realized that no one factor in astrology cannot be adequately interpreted if we do not understand the "astronomy and mathematics" behind it.

Essentially, the concept of lunar nodes is Indian. In fact, I myself looked more serious into those two factors in astrology, when I was introduced to the methodology of Indian astrology. Interestingly, in one of the "Bibles" of Western astrology - Tetrabiblos by Ptolemy - there's nothing written about the Lunar nodes. The reasons may be various, but probably it is due to more subjective than objective factors.

Lunar nodes are not planetary bodies. These are points where two orbits intersect - the moon's orbit around the Earth with the ecliptic, the apparent path of the sun, which is actually the Earth's orbit around the Sun. In these two sections meet the paths of the sun and the moon when viewed from Earth. They show where the merger of Sun and Moon appear. The actual merger occurs during eclipses - when the sun and moon are near the axis, which form the nodes. Sun and moon symbolize not only the human mind and soul, but also the yin and yang, day and night, man and woman. They show us that the human world is dual, bipolar. In Lunar nodes this duality disappears.

Lunar nodes are points at which the imbalance in nature occurs, because it is something like "short circuit" between lamps. Every living being is created through the moments of imbalance. Therefore, they are one of the primary factors in astrology, "guilty" for the creation and existence of new in life, a new life. North Node defines the beginning of the new after the old, the South - the end of the old, after which again comes a new beginning.

Lunar nodes have no material substance as stars and planets. They do not have mass. And that has made them one of the most difficult factors for interpretation. They show the direction of human life. They are our railway. In effect, what is the landscape that surrounds us, what kind of people we will meet along the way, the basic experiences and areas that we will develop in life. In short, they are the primary indicator of our individual human destiny.

In western astrology the importance of the two nodes is quite strongly polarized. It is believed that the North node is positive, it brings good luck in the areas affected, it shows the experience and things to which one has to focus and learn, as they bear most favorable results. The South node, in turn, is seen as negative, pointing to things that a man must be freed from. And the polarization is so distinct that they are referred to as completely separate things that have nothing in common.

And the reality is quite different. Here I will continue with some astronomical facts. Ecstatic poetry astrology is wonderful, but let us not forget that at the beginning of all stand astronomy and mathematics. Astronomical reality underlies every astrological interpretation.

The Lunar orbit has divergence of about 5° from the ecliptic, and this deviation is called latitude. At these points, we call Lunar nodes, there are changes in width - from north to south and vice versa. When the moon passes through the North node, it moves from south to north. And in this passage it seems to be "floating" above the ecliptic. In the South node is the opposite – it passes south. It is as if it "dives and sinks” under the ecliptic, symbolically turning its back on the Sun. Just when the moon passes through its nodes, it has no width.

These two processes of emergence and immersion with respect to the ecliptic are absolutely impossible to be separated from one another. These are the two inseparable halves of a single process. When the moon has northern latitude, which is what happens after it passes across the North node, it is time for new, expanding activity and to build some stability. When the moon has southern latitude - it is time to assimilate, to absorb and then release and dispose the unnecessary.

North Node in the horoscope defines where life poses challenges for a man and guides him (almost always accidental and involuntary) towards a specific direction. It shows qualities, resources and achievements that are unknown to him and therefore require a dose of effort. As a French proverb states – we meet destiny on the path that we intended to avoid. In other words, there is almost no one who is pleased to accept the direction in life, shown by his North node. This path is always difficult and everyone would run away from it. If they could. But they cannot because this direction comes through events in which one has no control over. This is destiny. It forces us to sit down and rely on something that is strange to us. In the beginning this is always difficult.

The South node defines what one holds as natural abilities and talents, which do not require absolutely no effort. This is the line of least resistance, which everyone gladly takes. And usually always there is someone or something to spoil the pleasure.
