Athens Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a criminal persecution against those responsible for the maintenance and utilization of the sites used to carry out the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

The charges of unscrupulous performance of duties in felony were brought as a result of the investigation by the judicial authorities that had lasted for months. The former manager of the company Olympic Properties SA, Konstantinos Matalas, is the defendant. Later it merged with another state-owned company.

At the same time the Prosecutor’s Office submitted a request to parliament to remove the parliamentary immunity of Dionysis Stamenitis from New Democracy who succeeded Matalas in the position of Director of the company. The judicial authorities intend to bring the same charges against him.

Investigation for dereliction of the Olympic venues started after press reports showing that no care has been taken as regards their maintenance and that they had not been used after the games. It is worth noting that the construction of the sites cost over 10 billion euros.

According to the prosecutors who conducted the investigation, the data collected showed that the two former directors of the company bear criminal responsibility for the dereliction of the sites.

The company they managed had assumed responsibility for the maintenance and utilization of all static and moving Olympics objects except for the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

The elaboration of the pre-court file on Konstantinos Matalas was assigned to an investigator.
