A couple of cargo ships collided last night in the eastern Aegean close to the Cycladic island of Amorgos. As a result of the collision, the Greek ship “Captain Michalis” has sunk. One person was left dead following the accident, and that is reportedly the ship’s chef – 70 year old Nikos Drossos. Eight other crew members were rescued and have avoided the worst.

Greek cargo carrier “Captain Michalis” was servicing a route between the island of Karpatos, part of the Dodecanese archipelago, and the island of Mykonos. The ship was carrying cement. The other vessel involved in the accident is “Santana”, flying a Maltese flag, and carrying iron from Ukraine to Thailand. The causes of the disaster are still unknown, but according to reports the two ships collided around 4 a.m. and the Greek vessel has sunk as a result. The operation to rescue the crew involved two Superpuma helicopters, a C100 military airplane and coast guard boats. The body of the 70 year old Greek seaman was found around 7 a.m., while the rest of the crew – 8 from “Captain Michalis” and 20 from “Santana” were already safe.
