A motorcyclist threw a bag with a homemade bomb into a restaurant on the main Patriarhou Joachim Street in the Athens district of Kolonaki. The incident happened at 5.30 this morning. The blast caused material damage and slightly injured an employee at the restaurant in the leg.

According to witnesses, the unidentified man threw a bag containing dynamite and a lit fuse into the room of the Souvlaki Kolonakiou restaurant. In the early morning, the restaurant was closed for customers, but there were several employees in it. One of them realised that there was a bomb in the thrown bag and reacted quickly – he grabbed the bag in the air, threw it back onto the street and tried to put out the burning wick with a stream of water.

However, the bomb exploded and caused damage to cars that were parked around and smashed windows of neighbouring buildings. It also slightly injured the leg of the same employee who was immediately taken to the emergency room of the nearby Evangelismos Hospital.

Patriarhou Joachim Street in Kolonaki remained closed for several hours. Police forces and the fire-fighting department are analysing material prints and tracks. According to the first estimates of the police, this is probably a settling of accounts between racketeers and the restaurant’s owners.

To be continued.
