The Greek parliament approved at midnight the government of SYRIZA and Independent Greeks with 162 votes "for", from 149 MPs of SYRIZA and 13 of Independent Greeks. Therefore, for the first time in its history Greece will have a government composed of two extreme formations, namely of the radical left and of open nationalism.
All other 137 members of New Democracy, Golden Dawn, Potami, the Communist Party of Greece and PASOK who were present voted against the government. Secretary of Golden Dawn Nikos Michaloliakos was absent from the parliamentary session.
"This is a historic moment for the Greek parliament and the Greek people," parliament speaker Zoe Kostantopoulou said from the rostrum after the results were announced.
"This is a critical moment for Europe, which should show endurance. We cannot return from the Eurogroup with our heads down. Greece will be there, not Yanis Varoufakis. We will not negotiate on the Memorandum but on a new agreement with the lenders," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stated, having received a vote of confidence from parliament.
