Economy is the focus of the discussions in Nauplious, where the second pre-congress of New Democracy is held, which began with a speech by the party leader Antonis Samaras. Three main issues were discussed at the Congress: competitiveness, development and employment.

"The Prime Minister first approached the International Monetary Fund to put a gun on the table and his bluff turned against Greece," said Mr. Samaras, adding that "gun fired off in his hands!" Further, Mr. Samaras accused the government that it has deceived the Greeks during the pre election campaign as has it led voters to create false expectations, and currently as he stated himself, the government is “in panic and spreads despair!”.

'Nobody gives cheap loans to a country when it itself recognizes and declares that it is sinking!”, added Mr Samaras criticizing the Prime Minister George Papandreou on the occasion of the events from the recent weeks. At the end of his speech, Mr. Samaras added that in any country in which the International Monetary Fund takes over, measures are always related to cuts in wages and pensions. He predicted that the country will fall in the vicious circle of recession, unemployment, deficit and will remain without an exit and without any perspective.

Self-criticism also didn’t lack on the part of the leader of New Democracy. In his speech he admitted that the previous government lacked courage, it has made errors and many omissions. Mr. Samaras conveyed the message that currently New Democracy is rebuilding the confidence of the electorate and that his party “recognizes all their sins” and removes all the burdens of the past.

Dora Bakoyannis again distinguished her position from the official position of the party - this time on the occasion of the IMF intervention in the economy of Greece. "Before we rush to conclusions about the mechanisms of support, let us answer one question: Can Greece continue to borrow money with interest of 7% and 8%” showing that she supports the government policy on the mechanism of euro support.

Two of the members of New Democracy, who have held high positions in previous governments - Aris Spiliotopulos and Vangelis Meymarkis did not attend the congress, though their presence according to protocol is considered implicit.

Leadership of the Party intends to innovate entirely New Democracy, after last October suffered a cruel defeat. To achieve this goal, the party must activate its 800 000 members, who it realized it has after the end of the internal party elections on 29 November last year for appointing of a leader of the party. Preliminary Congress in Nauplious is the second one, held after the first time New Democracy held this kind of congress in Thessaloniki on March 20. The next pre-congress will be held in June in the city of Iraklio on the island of Crete, where the ideology of New Democracy will be discussed.
