With or without SYRIZA, the Greek islands remain a favourite holiday destination

At the height of the tourist season and the beginning of the politicians' recess, we asked you: "Which is your favourite Greek island?". Mentioning the end of the political season is not a sheer coincidence, because the answers to the questionnaire bore some political hues as well. Political affiliations, as well as the specifics of our three target audiences from a tourist industry perspective, have put their mark on the distribution of the vote.

In recent years, Greece has become the most visited international tourist destination for Bulgarians. Factors such as proximity, common history and wonderful Mediterranean climes are leading among the host of reasons why our compatriots pin their holiday preferences on Greece. Indeed, Bulgarians have easier access to the Greek north, but the islands are a desired destination no less. World-famous Santorini has proven rather popular among our Bulgarian readers as well. 33% of them have selected it as their favourite island for its renowned sunset. 22% say they do not like the islands because of their uniformity. Yet we believe that long distances rather than uniformity are the reason for this reply. High-end Mykonos has gathered 15% of the readers' votes. Given the fact that Bulgaria is the poorest country in Europe, the prevalence of this response only confirms our Balkan contradictory instincts. Can it be attributed to respondents' desires to enjoy a luxury vacation, which they can't afford, or does this choice reflect genuine five-star experiences? We can only guess. Corfu is the choice of 11% of our readers, because this is where Alexis Tsipras takes a break. It might be the phenomenon of a super-star politician whose holiday choice rubs off on the island. Crete attracts 10%, because a number of Greek politicians spend their holidays there, including the New Democracy leader, Evangelos Meimarakis. 8% of popular love goes to Ikaria, where the secret of longevity is hidden. Only 1% of it remains for the island of Aegina, where the villa of former Finance Minister Yannis Varoufakis is located.

Our English-speaking audience, which is quite apart from the Balkan political passions, cited Ikaria as the most favoured island. Longevity's secret is an evergreen by way of human interest, and a whopping 35% of our English language readers evidently share this fascination. 19% are attracted by Santorini's unforgettable sunsets. For about 16% of respondents, the Greek islands are too much alike. Corfu is the favourite for 11% of them as the place where the Greek prime minister goes for a rest. Crete was selected by 8% of our readers: it is the place where many Greek politicians chill out, including New Democracy's leader Evangelos Meimarakis. 5% each have Mykonos, for its luxury, and Aegina, where the house of Yannis Varoufakis is.

It is fascinating to see what attitudes are shared by our Greek hosts. Convincingly, by 44%, Santorini is the place they considered most emblematic and representing Greece before the world. 17% of the vote goes to Ikaria, with its secret of youth, as well as to Crete, which is the favourite vacation spot for no mean part of the Greek political class, including New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis. Surprisingly, 11% of GRReporter's Greek page readers find their native islands too uniform. We can put it down to the fact that while foreign tourists perceive the islands as exotic, for local people they are perhaps too run-of-the-mill. 6% of the readers' love to goes to Mykonos for its luxury, and to Aegina, boasting the house of former finance minister Varoufakis. Last but not least comes Corfu, whose merits are thoroughly neglected because we put it in one and the same breath with Tsipras's name. None of our Greek readers has made the island his/her choice. The warmth of people's trust and support seem to have paled into insignificance in the heat of summer.

In our latest poll we ask you: Do you think that predictions of mass exodus of Greek companies to neighbouring countries will come true? Do not forget to give us the reasons for your choice in the comments underneath.
