Parcel bomb was sent to the former head of antiterrorists

A parcel containing explosives was discovered among the letters and parcels in the distribution centre of the Greek post office in Krioneri near Athens. The parcel with the explosives fell off the pile and ignited spontaneously at 03:30 am when the employees were carrying away the packages collected during the day.

Members of the explosive dismantling unit had immediately arrived on the scene and dismantled the explosive mechanism. There were no casualties or injuries due to the incident.

The parcel was in a folder which is reminiscent of the methods of the "Informal Anarchist Federation" (FAI) group.

About three years ago, that particular group sent parcel bombs addressed to the former director of the prison in Korydallos and to the Minister of Justice at the time. They wanted to show in this way solidarity with the apprehended members of the Greek group "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei".

The official message of the anti-terrorist service states that the parcel had been sent from Thessaloniki. The recipient was a retired senior police officer and a relative of his was indicated as the sender.

"Inside the parcel there was a folder containing an explosive whose composition is not yet known. The external envelope is yellow in colour and A3 in size, and the folder is brown, 32x24x8 cm in size, with "Velcro" closing. The data of the sender and recipient were printed by computer on labels which had been stuck on the outside of the parcel."

The service is urging the staff of the post office to be cautious and immediately notify the authorities if they receive a similar parcel.

According to an article in To Vima newspaper, the recipient of the parcel was the former director of the anti terrorist service who had discovered the hiding place of "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei" in the Athens suburb of Halandri in September 2009 and was a witness in the case against its members. The particular investigation had enabled the authorities to identify at least ten participants in the group.

The same article states that the name of the brother of the police officer who is also a policeman was indicated as the sender of the envelope. However, he does not live in Thessaloniki but in a northern Athens suburb and his house is near the house of his brother. It is striking that the address of the recipient in the neighbourhood of Kato Patisia coincides with the address of the house where the former director of antiterrorists lived ten years ago.

Policemen describe the case as an attempt to revive the group "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei" with the help of the international network of armed groups FAI. They fear that armed attacks will follow as well as a second wave of parcel bombs which the criminals would probably continue to send.

The police suggest that members of "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei" who have not been apprehended or the Italian group "Informal Anarchist Federation" (FAI) will assume responsibility for sending the parcel.

At the same time, the police are investigating the possibility of the parcel having been sent in connection with the prolonged custody of Kostas Sakas who is accused of involvement in “Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei." He has been on a hunger strike, requiring to be released as he has been in prison without a completed trial against him.

Just a few days ago, a new group assumed responsibility for the attack with Kalashnikovs against the headquarters of New Democracy on 14 January this year. The manifesto which the "Group of People’s Fighters" had published on the internet states that its original purpose was to use during the attack a rocket launcher type RPG. However, this was not possible and they used Kalashnikovs instead.

Regarding the delay of the manifesto, the group claims that its goal was to intensify the admission and connections with other "people struggling with all those social groups which have become the target of the severity of the government." In the long text they also analyze the economic and social situation in Greece and the world, write about Golden Dawn and criticize the left wing.
