The president of New Democracy, Evangelos Meimarakis, met with the leader of PASOK, Fofi Gennimata, at noon today. Meimarakis is carrying on his consultations with political leaders in an attempt to form a new government within an exploratory mandate.
After his meeting yesterday with Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis, Meimarakis spent an hour today talking with Gennimata. The talks produced no surprise.
Immediately after they finished, Gennimata said that this parliament would not form another government "because of Mr. Tsipras"; she argued that any delay could have consequences for the country.
She also warned that the election process must be speeded up, as "Grexit is still on our doorstep."
Gennimata maintains that the constitutional provisions must be followed for what they are, but "we should not play into the hands of uncertainty and inertia."
Gennimata qualified Tsipras' decision to call elections as "disastrous for the country" and accused him of recklessness. "He goes to the polls to prevent people from realising the consequences of the memorandum," she said.
PASOK's president added that the country must be governed securely and efficiently. "This is why it is our aim to prove ourselves as a third alternative pole that can guarantee positive solutions," she stressed.
Gennimata said she was optimistic about PASOK.
Right after Meimarakis met Gennimata, his predecessor, former prime minister Antonis Samaras dropped by his office. They discussed the upcoming elections since apparently no party could form a government within the current parliamentary term.
At 18:00 Meimarakis will also meet the president of the new party, Popular Unity, Panagiotis Lafazanis.
