"Partisan struggle in the city" took responsibility for the bomb in the Athenian underground

An organization called "Partisan struggle in the city" took responsibility for placing the explosive mechanism in the Athenian underground two days ago. In telephone calls to Sky and Mega television stations, an unknown person had stated that the members of the organization intend to repeat this action.

Minutes earlier, the Minister of Citizen Protection Christos Papoutsis resigned in a letter to Prime Minister Lucas Papademos. In it, he states that the reason for his decision to leave the Ministry is his intention to run for president of PASOK.

Despite the three off-days, the Greek police are on the alert, and the thought that the terrorist attack in the Athenian underground was prevented only by mere chance is still the concern of the experts to combat terrorism. The clockwork bomb found at the underground station in the neighbourhood of Egaleo on Saturday had not been preceded by a telephone call, as is the practice of local leftist terrorist groups. Even more disturbing is the fact that the police did not have operational information about the future terrorist attack.
After the initial examination of the explosive device, which consisted of four litres of inflammable fluid, an ignition device and a timing mechanism, police are convinced that the bomb was activated but failed to explode for some as yet unknown reason. A possible explanation could be a mistake in connecting the device. The experts are unable to determine when the bomb was to explode, but believe that this was supposed to happen at the station in Egaleo.
The whole package is being investigated for fingerprints or DNA left accidentally. The bomb was placed in a paper bag, green in colour. Video recordings from the cameras not only at the station where the device was found, but at other stations along the underground line are also being investigated for any traces of the person or persons, who left the package in the wagon. As for the type of the device, experts believe it resembles the home-made bombs used in the past, but they cannot connect it to a specific terrorist organization.
Police are appealing to the people who were in the underground line between the Ministry of Citizen Protection and Egaleo around 5 pm on Saturday and have some information on the case to call 170, 1014 and 1964. The anti-terrorism service guarantees the anonymity of individuals.
