The European Socialists refused to accept SYRIZA in their ranks. The announcement was made in a letter from chairman of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Gianni Pittella.
"We have never proposed Alexis Tsipras a place in the family of European social democrats," he writes, noting that on 23 September he met with the Greek Prime Minister and leader of the radical left SYRIZA. Pittella confirms that he had stated that Greece would not be able to survive only through the budget cuts envisaged in the third memorandum of financial support. "Renegotiating the public debt is necessary as well as new investments," he adds.
In his letter, Gianni Pittella indicates that he had clearly stated to Alexis Tsipras that he was firmly against the coalition between SYRIZA and Independent Greeks (ANEL). "This is a strategic error of the Prime Minister, which will negatively affect reforms in Greece."
At the end of the letter he adds, "Any decision towards strategic collaborations with parties in Greece will be discussed first with the comrades of PASOK and Potami that are official members of the European Social Democrats."
Gianni Pittella supports these words in a letter to Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis, in which he states, "Potami has been able to determine the agenda for a better Greece. Potami’s political priorities coincide with many of the priorities of all the progressive forces in Europe."
