Iraklio Avenue in the northern suburbs of Athens was still closed even on Saturday morning.
There, last night at 7 p.m. 22-year-old Emmanouil Kapelonis and 26-year-old George Foundoulis were shot point-blank. They were both members of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party. They were murdered in front of the office of the party in the neighbourhood. Alexandros Gerondas, aged 29, was also badly injured during the shooting and was operated on for 4 hours last night.
The medical report clearly showed that the young man was admitted with gunshot wounds in the lungs, stomach and diaphragm as well as internal bleeding in the lungs, where a bullet had stuck. On the way to the hospital, before falling unconscious, he told the accompanying doctor in the ambulance that the assailant continued shooting even when they were seriously injured and had fallen to the ground. The police said that the 29-year-old man who is fighting for his life at the moment is married and has a young child; his mother was a municipal councillor of the Independent Greeks party in the municipality of Kifissia.
The anti-terrorism service is investigating the case. Early on Saturday morning the results of the ballistics of the weapon that was used in the double murder became known. The gun is a "Zastava" and was "clean" - i.e. it had not been used in other terrorist attacks. This weapon is typical of the arsenal of the Sect of Revolutionaries – the most bloodthirsty Greek terrorist organization. "Zastava" type guns are also often used by ordinary criminals.
The police are also examining the video from the surveillance cameras of the restaurant in front of which the murder happened. It seems that the attackers were two, their faces obscured by motorcycle helmets, of approximate age of 25-30. One of them approached the victims and shot them pointblank and afterwards the two of them moved away together, got on the bike and disappeared. Experts believe that the two killers abandoned the motorcycle nearby and were "taken" by a supporting group that took them to a safe location.
The double murder of members of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party has been defined as a riposte to extreme left forces for the murder of rapper Pavlos Fyssas by a member of Golden Dawn. Greek neo-Nazis have become objects of terrorist attacks other times too, but without bloodshed. A few months ago their organization in the neighbourhood in Aspropyrgos was blown up. At the time, the FAI organization took responsibility.
