Today the Secretary General of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior announced that former director of the State Agency for National Security Petko Sertov was localised in Athens. His whereabouts have been unknown since 5 December and he was reported missing after his wife provided information on the case.
Immediately after the briefing of Svetozar Lazarov before the Bulgarian media in Sofia, in which he announced that Sertov had been registered at a hotel in central Athens, GRReporter's team went to the site to report on the developments.
Nana Hotel is located in the area around Athens railway station, known as Larissa Station. According to a man who presented himself as the hotel manager, mentioning only his first name Takis, there are often Bulgarians among the hotel guests. In his words, they visit Athens both on business and as tourists.
Mr. Takis said that Petko Sertov had stayed at the hotel for two days and paid 30 euro per night, including breakfast. He was alone and met no one during his stay.
"The gentleman was calm, in a good mood and in no way was he different from the other hotel guests. He came down to the lobby, accessed the Internet from the computer at the reception desk and ordered even ouzo once."
According to Takis, Sertov talked to the hotel staff mainly in English, and sometimes in Greek. He paid all his bills in cash.
Contrary to the message of the Ministry of Interior that the former Bulgarian top intelligence officer left the hotel yesterday, the man who presented himself as the hotel manager said the guest had left on Sunday.
At the end of his statements, the Secretary of the Ministry of Interior stressed that the localisation of Petko Sertov was possible due to the active support of the Greek police, which had supplied the Bulgarian counterparts with real time data on the movement of Sertov in Greece.
