The plane of Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has landed at Athens "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport and cannot fly to Geneva. The top diplomat of Damascus, who is to participate in an international conference in Switzerland, is on board too. Due to the international embargo against the regime of Bashar Assad, the aircraft cannot be refuelled. The "Tupolev" aircraft operated by Syrian Air landed at the airport in Athens at 11.57 am today.
The announcement was made by the Syrian state television. The press office of the Greek civil aviation has confirmed the information, stating that the problem is not technical but political; it is about to be instructed as to how to proceed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that there are international rules for acting in terms of embargo. First, the aircraft should undergo a check and after its completion and provided that there is nothing wrong, it will be fuelled and will fly to Geneva.
