The Greek police was able to neutralize a bomb by a controlled explosion shortly after midnight on Monday. Between 11:22 pm and 11:31 pm, an unknown person had called the editor’s office of the news website zougla.gr and a television channel and warned that, in 20 minutes, there would be an explosion at the tax office in the Athens district of Korydallos, where the largest Greek prison is located.
The police had immediately surrounded the building and cut off the area around the tax office. The sappers from the Department of Explosive Devices Disposal had discovered a suspicious package at the entrance of the tax office. The police waited for a few minutes in order for the time specified by the unknown person as the time of the explosion to pass but the device did not explode.
The sappers proceeded to the controlled explosion and actually found out that there was a clockwork bomb in the package, which, for some reason, failed to explode. The remains of the device are currently in the specialized laboratories of the anti-terrorism service that has undertaken the investigation.
According to zougla.gr, the explosive device contained 8 kilograms of dynamite. It is expected that the police will make an official announcement by the end of the day.
