Police forces raided the prison in Malandrinou where Albanian recidivist Alket Rizaj held six hostages last night. One of them, a prison guard, managed to escape from his captor and said that the Rizaj is ready "either to die, or to get out free." Currently the offender, together with the other five hostages and two aides, is in the commandant's office of the prison and has no visual contact with the gate and yard, where the police are. He wants to be given a car in order to escape from the prison together with his associates and hostages. He spoke several times with his lawyer Sakis Kehaioglou last night and once with his girlfriend Soula, who tried to persuade him to surrender. As GRReporter has already informed, Rizaj’s mental state displays extreme nervous agitation and everybody is afraid that he is determined to go to any lengths.
So far, it seems that the tactic of the police is "Let him become exhausted." Earlier this morning, Special Forces used tear gas, which made the offender very angry. Gunshots were heard around 2:00 p.m. The police are guarding all major roads in Phocis, where the prison known as "the Greek Alcatraz" is located. Since last night, two cars have been searched for, which, according to the police, were waiting for Rizaj nearby and were ready to hide him somewhere. One of them is a silvery Opel, in which two Albanians are travelling, and the other is a Suzuki Vitara driven by a woman.
A moment ago, the police released a photo of Alket Rizaj and his hostages:
In an interview for the Albanian site news24, Alket’s mother, Donika Rizaj, appealed to Albanian authorities for their intervention in order to protect her son. "Alket is a good boy, calm. Yesterday I talked to him, he said nothing. He is neither a thief, nor a criminal, nor a murderer. Greek authorities want to sentence him to 25 years in prison because he has escaped twice. This is not possible anywhere in the world," said Donika Rizaj. She appealed to her son: "Do not give up, Alket! Pursue your aim to the end", says the publication.
