The guards in Greek prisons are on strike again, today from 8:00 am to 11:00 am and from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, to protest against the "explosion hazard" situation in prisons both for themselves and for the prisoners who are serving their sentence. The strike of the guards is repetitive and it will continue next Monday and Tuesday.
During the suspension of work no visits by lawyers and relatives of the prisoners will be carried out, nor acceptance and transfer of prisoners.
Before ΑΝΤ1 TV, president of the Federation of Guards in Greece Spiros Karakitsos described the transfer to the municipal police prisons as a fiasco "because of the existing bureaucracy and improvisation."
He added that the shortage of prison staff is an "explosion hazard" and gave Korydallos prison as the most striking example, as there one or two guards on shift are in charge of 500 prisoners.
Spiros Karakitsos also said that over 2,000 prisoners are crammed in prisons with a capacity for 900 and requested measures to alleviate the situation.
The president of the Federation of Guards in Greece also mentioned the hunger strike that "dozens of prisoners" began five days ago.
The human rights organization "Initiative for prisoners' rights" states in a press release that over 4,500 prisoners from 15 prisons in Greece refused to eat in protest against prison conditions and the creation of prisons with the highest level of security.
