If we look through the National Classification of Occupations in Bulgaria, under the section "Personnel in public services" appears the profession Astrologer. For this class under which the occupation is classified it is specified that it requires knowledge and skills that correspond to the requirements for second educational and qualification level. In other words, it is necessary for person to have completed the 10th grade and a brief professional qualification. As a comparison I would say that in Bulgaria there are 9 educational levels. I am not aware where exactly among the professions in other countries are the astrologers, but I assume that the situation is hardly different.
Actually I would not call astrology a profession. This is a vocation. Professions as we know them are generally activities that are associated with "how to do something." Astrology does not fit into these frameworks. When analyzing the horoscope we do not give recipes we do not make plans and projects, nor do we produce something. Because the answer to the question "How to....?" is "You have to go through it".
Astrologers read the "book of life". This book is not subject to correction. And if you tear its pages or swap them this will not change the text. It is only to be read - whether you enjoy it or not, in this case is irrelevant. In one of my dusty books – an Indian treatise on astrology, written about 1500 years BC – there is a separate place in the beginning of the question of who can learn astrology, what qualifications he should have, how to approach the astrological analysis. I quote a part:
"Astrology is taught in three sections, three main areas - astronomy, astrological mathematics and analytical part.
....
The astrologer should always carefully consider the type, movements and actions of his client. Pay attention to all signs. To get to know the human nature.
......
The person who has some questions must present a gift to the astrologer and to refer the issue with respect. Only questions emerging from pure motives deserve an answer. One should not make a prediction to someone who has not asked for it, nor to a person who wants to test the astrologer. If the astrologer ignores this, he would not be able to reach the correct conclusion."
In India, only Brahmins had access to study astrology. Brahmins were the most esteemed class in society. This was the elite. Exactly the same happened in the Western world, particularly in Greece. To astrology have been attracted some of the most famous scholars in ancient Greece, who have presented and kept astrology in Europe. These are the people who have had some abilities and preferences in science and philosophy. An astrologer must have knowledge of philosophy, knowledge of the issue of what is life, spherical astronomy, mathematics, knowledge of nature and natural laws, innate intelligence and wisdom. These were people whose life was not secular. It was devoted to studying of physics, mathematics, philosophy, astronomy. Because without these sciences one can not reach the essence of astrology.
In practice astrology requires a serious devotion. I can make parallels with the scientists who for years have studied some Egyptian pyramid. They spend much of their life in exile. Just like Champollion, who devoted 16 years of hard work to decipher the Rosetta Stone. To achieve the ability to read a horoscope, an astrologer must spend years in studying philosophy, psychology, astronomy and astrology. Anyone able to imagine what kind of work this is, what it costs for a person to do it, would not think even for a moment to show contempt and disrespect. Especially in terms of the monetary reward for an analysis by an astrologer. I agree that there is much abuse by charlatans. But I will not comment on them.
In the Eastern world, unlike in the western, there is a totally different attitude to astrologers. There, nobody criticizes astrologers. Rather on the opposite – they treat them with particular respect and honor and consult an astrologer only at certain milestones. A man from the East rarely shows curiosity to get an analysis of his personal horoscope just for fun because he’s interested in it. This shows a deep-seated wisdom, that in order to look 'forward', you must be ready, to have a reason to do it and accept it humbly.
