Deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court Athanasios Katsirodis requested the withdrawal of the parliamentary immunity of former foreign minister in the government of New Democracy and current leader of the Democratic Alliance Dora Bakogiannis. Bakogiannis, who is the daughter of New Democracy honorary president Konstantinos Mitsotakis, was accused of not stating the amount of 1 million dollars in her tax return. Her husband, businessman Isidoros Kouvelis, obtained the amount after selling shares owned by him in the United States and then, tried to buy a vessel in London with the money.
The fuss started several weeks ago when another deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Panagiotis Nikoloudis dealing with money laundering, announced that he had found a deputy who had exported 1 million euro to a Swiss bank. The news was circulating in the media for days and sparked a wave of speculation regarding the name of the deputy. Later, it turned out that it was not about a deputy but about a spouse of a deputy and the amount was not 1 million euro but 1 million dollars.
Even then, Dora Bakogiannis described the way in which Greek justice announced the case as biased and manipulative. Today she just said, "I do not intend to take advantage of my parliamentary immunity. However, I cannot understand why journalists are informing me about the request of the Supreme Court instead of parliament." According to her, the fuss about the business activities of her husband is due to "the battle Democratic Alliance is leading against the illegal funding of parties."
