Two big fires are raging since yesterday afternoon in the forest areas on the island of Zakynthos. The first began at 06:15 pm in Damaria and the second started 35 minutes later in Katastari. 25 firefighters and cars, two planes and 15 foot soldiers were sent to the areas of fire. Two other fires are raging in the country – one of unknown cause started late at night around 3:35 am in the village of Vrises in Cypress, where 14 firefighters, seven fire vehicles and two planes were sent. The second fire is in the area of Tropea in Arcadia on Pelopones. 24 firefighters with nine cars, a helicopter and six municipal tanks were involved in the fire extinguishing.

Meanwhile, fires on the islands of Lefkada and Kefalonya continue. The fire started in Lefkada from the Karia Cemetery and spread to Egluvi and St. Elias. 45 firefighters with 22 cars, 48 other firefighters, two planes to throw water from the air and two helicopters were sent there. The municipal governor of Lefkada Konstantinos Aravanis, who coordinates the operation, said that the conditions are extremely difficult and civilians are trying to participate in the fire extinguishment as the mountain of the island is at risk.

A fire in a forest area with low vegetation continues in the area of Simotata in Kefalonya. The populated areas are not at risk. 20 firefighters, 9 vehicles, 37 foot soldiers, two planes and one helicopter fight the fire on the Ionian Islands.

The fire in the village Zilevto, 15 km away from Lamia, is almost under control. Firemen said that most likely the fire was caused by a piroman because there were attempts to start another three fires in the area in the last 24 hours. They were extinguished from the start. But the last fire broke out near the road between Lamia and Karpenisi. It has spread quite rapidly due to the strong winds and turned to the forest. All firefighters were in Sperhiada area at that time where another fire broke out 45 minutes earlier. It was put out. The fire near the village of Zilevto has spread across more than one kilometer. The fire brigade was informed immediately and all firefighters in the region were sent there. Planes were involved in the fire extinguishing but it was difficult to throw water in the center of the fire because there were electric poles. The blowing winds are pushing the fire to the village of Zilevto.

Another fire broke in the Galata district, where 20 firefighters and seven cars were sent to put it out. The fire forces near the Greek-Albanian border, where a fire broke in a forest and hard accessible mountain area near Palamba in the Thesprotia district, were increased.

There were fires on the islands of Kythira and Corfu. Today the areas of the Ionian Islands and Attica are at high risk because of the strong winds and the high temperatures.
