The heavy rain that poured in Attica yesterday afternoon caused a lot of problems, fortunately not serious. The fire department received 75 reports on fallen trees and 25 on flooded basements.
However, there was a serious problem at Piraeus port, where due to the strong wind, the ferry "Apollon Hellas" with 36 passengers on board was unable to dock and its captain requested help from a tugboat.
Bad weather will continue until tomorrow, Friday, in the larger part of the country, and until Saturday in the eastern and southern regions.
In particular, according to the National Weather Service, today, Thursday, heavy rainfall and storms were reported in eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese. Temperatures are slightly falling, ranging from 11°C to 18°C in Attica.
On Friday, the storms will start first in the west and north, and in the east Aegean, and will gradually spread throughout the country. It will snow in the western, central and northern mountainous areas. Strong winds will blow in the Aegean, reaching 8 on the Beaufort scale in places. Temperatures will further fall.
It will be cloudy with rain and storms in places on Saturday, mainly in eastern and southern Greece and with light snowfall in the mountainous areas. Bad weather will gradually be limited to eastern Greece, and the wind will subside. Temperatures will remain unchanged.
Cloudy weather and rain are expected in the eastern Aegean Sea area on Sunday whereas storms will gradually subside. It will be cloudy in the rest of the country, and temperatures will again remain unchanged.
Tornado in Corfu
Meanwhile, a tornado has hit the southern part of Corfu, causing serious damage to homes and roads in the area Petriti-Kouspades. The tornado has uprooted olive trees and swept away the roof of the agricultural cooperative in Argirades, throwing it onto a neighbouring house. As stated by chief of the fire department of the Ionian Islands Efthimios Georgakopoulos before the Athens News Agency, over ten men have already arrived in the region, trying to repair the damage by removing fallen trees from roads and people’s houses. So far, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
Problems in Preveza
Flooded ground floors of shops and houses and roads turned into rivers are the results of heavy rains in Preveza. The rainfall caused serious problems in the city central streets and along the seafront, and water exceeded 20 cm in the ground floors of homes and shops in the city historic centre. The fire department received dozens of reports on flooded basements and the teams of the municipality provided assistance.
Bad weather with strong winds and storms have tormented the area of Epirus in northwestern Greece since Tuesday evening. As reported by the Athens News Agency, homes and streets in Igoumenitsa have been flooded and there are problems in Arta.
