The warm and humid weather during the last few days will gradually give way to heavy showers and thunderstorms in places, Greek meteorologists predict. The weather will start worsening on Friday afternoon, with showers in Greece’s western regions as well as in the eastern parts of the Aegean. The rest of the country will see brief showers and storms.
On Saturday, most affected by the rain will be the regions of western Greece and the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese. In some places rainfall is expected to be intense.
The rest of Greece will see some showers, with snowfalls expected in higher-altitude places and even in lower-lying regions in Western Macedonia and Epirus. Winds will measure Beaufort 5-7 whereas temperatures are expected to drop.
On Sunday, when Greeks will be voting, meteorologists predict heavy clouds with profuse showers and storms on the islands in the eastern and southern Aegean Sea. The rest of Greece will see cloudy weather with brief rain, but also sunny spells. The mountainous regions of central and northern Greece will experience snowfalls.
Wind intensity will gradually drop, with temperatures staying basically the same.
Meanwhile, in the late afternoon on Thursday, a powerful tornado caused severe damage in the seaside town of Katakolo in the western part of the Peloponnese.
According to the local news sites iliaoikonomia, the gale force wind tilted the yachts in the port and toppled trees, which caused serious damage to roofs and buildings.
