The ones traveling shorter distances will pay less but the ones going further away will have to pay more, announced “New Road”. The new prices will be valid from today, September 29.

If until now, in order to get from Athens to Lamia, it cost you €8.25, from now on it will cost €12.60. If we calculate the price increase in percentages, it comes out to be about 45% increase for the mentioned route. On the other hand, if you want to go from Athens to Chalkida, it will be cheaper than before – from €5.50 the road fee falls to €3.70.

The road tax increase is part of the new system for paying per kilometer—in other words, you will pay e certain amount in relation to the kilometers you have passed. Now every kilometer is calculated on €0.031 plus VAT, which makes the total amount to about €0.037 per kilometer. Meanwhile the road toll in Shimatari will close but another one will open in Tiva, Kapandriti, Malakasa, Inofita and Trigana.

The road tax increase was discussed by representatives of the opposition coalition SIRIZA. They said that it was illegal, because the roads do not correspond to the set requirements. This is why the coalition offered the gathered financial resources from the road tax, which go to the state treasury, to be invested in public transportation and in improving the quality of railway transportation, as it is in other countries.
