The robber surrendered - the hostages are free

Police managed to persuade a bank robber in Piraeus, who was holding 17 people of hostages for several hours, to free them and surrender. The burglar was holding two grenades and threatened the people with them. The traffic on the streets around the bank was stopped, and the area of 100 meters in diameter was closed off.  

The robber held customers and employees of hostages at the National Bank’s branch on 87 Iroon Politehniu Street for almost three hours. Four shots were heard at some point, but it became clear that they were to intimidate and nobody was injured, Ta Nea newspaper reported.

The robber entered the bank with an accomplice. He, however, managed to escape when he heard the approaching police cars. The second robber was trapped in the bank and took hostages. The police caught two other accomplices, who probably had to watch outside.

The police succeeded to convince the robber to free the hostages and surrender after tough negotiations. At first, they convinced him to release 14 women and then the hooded man came outside the bank holding four people of hostages under the threat of a gun. Two of them managed to escape, and the robber hid back in the bank together with the other two people.

Finally, the robber hold two employees of hostages in the bank, but about 03 o’clock the  police managed to persuade him to free them and to surrender himself to authorities.
