A boom of robberies shook major cities in Greece from Thursday evening through Friday morning, most of them being intended for jewellery shops. There were ten complaints for burglary in less than 12 hours, which proves that the trend of increasing crime during crisis will not stop any time soon. So far, police statistics show that robberies in Greece have risen by about 60%.

At eight o’clock in the morning, a branch of the National Post Services on 22, Olof Palme St. in the Greek capital was robbed. Unknown assailants broke through the entrance, opened the protective glass of the safe and escaped with all the available money. Earlier in the day, another criminal organization committed two other robberies with only eight minutes difference between them. The first was on 30, Irinis Avenue in Athens, where there is an old jewellery shop. The robbery was carried out at 4.20 am. The gang had broken the protective tape and tied it to the towbar of a car stolen earlier. They used it only to be able to enter the shop. After that, they abandoned the car at the scene. They left the crime scene by another car and eight minutes later, the same operation was repeated on 75, Sahturi St. in Piraeus, where another jewellery shop was broken into and robbed.

At nine o’clock in the evening on Thursday, in the Neo Psychico district, three unknown persons threatened with a gun the owner of another jewellery shop that became a victim of robbery just before closing it. They took all the jewellery they could and disappeared in an unknown direction.

At 3.25 am, in the Aspropyrgos neighbourhood in the outskirts of the capital, three people broke into a private home armed with guns and stole two mobile phones, a small amount of cash and documents. Apparently, the criminals were amateurs, because the police caught them later while they were attempting to break into and steal a car in the same area. According to the database of public security, two of the three have a criminal record and had been previously caught in the past, again for theft. The crime report states that the attackers in Aspropyrgos were foreigners, but it does not specify their nationality.

Three assailants, who threatened the owners of a private home with a knife to take cash, carried out another armed burglary in Salamina. The family did not have a large amount in the house and the attackers quickly left. There were no injuries. In this same situation, but with minor injuries, is the owner of a small house in Asprohori, who was also robbed of a small amount of money.

There was an attempted murder in the night, after two strangers tried to break open the door of housing in the student dormitories in the capital. When students from neighbouring apartments heard suspicious noises, they came out to see what was happening and the attackers began firing at them. There were no injuries and the police arrived on the scene in time to capture the offenders. In addition to the abovementioned crime, the police reported the robbery of a taxi driver in Iraklion in Crete, an attack and a robbery at a petrol station in the metropolitan district of Glyfada and at a small shop on the 33rd km of the Corinth-Athens ring road.
