A seven-year-old girl died in hospital after a police officer from the Greek police’s DIAS forces dragged her with his motorcycle to the gypsy camp in the Athens suburb of Menidi earlier today.
According to the Roma, the police officer dragged the child about 150 metres and did not stop to help her. They say from the police, however, that their colleague stopped immediately and called for help on the radio. Ambulance arrived on the scene that drove the wounded child to hospital with police patrol.
The incident caused confusion and tension among locals. Around 100 Roma blocked one of the central streets of the neighbourhood and set fire to rubbish bins. They threw earlier stones at a train passing nearby without wounding any of the passengers. There are riot forces in the region using tear gas to disperse the Roma who threw Molotov bombs at them. The Roma protest continued ever since and the crowd of angry residents is steadily increasing.
