On 28 June 700 athletes from different countries will ascend the "Mountain of the Gods" Olympus for the 12th time. Olympus Marathon is the most important mountain marathon in Greece, in which the athletes start the race from zero altitude to reach up to nearly 3,000 metres before descending again.
The route follows the path of the ancient inhabitants of Dion, who climbed to the top of Olympus every summer to pay homage to the father of all gods and men Zeus.
The participants pass through difficult sections but at the same time, they have the opportunity to enjoy the unique mountain scenery such as the ravine of Orlias, passages with lush vegetation, the alpine zone and the gorge of the river Enipeas.
The marathon runners cover 44 kilometres, starting early in the morning at the archaeological site of Dion and finishing in the Litochoro town.
