Seismologists are warning the people in Kefalonia not to enter their houses

Seismologists are warning the residents of Kefalonia not to enter their houses that are heavily damaged by the intense seismic activity on the island. Only until Sunday evening, over 750 houses were declared unsuitable for habitation and their number will increase after the establishment of the damage caused by yesterday's powerful earthquake of 5.7 on the Richter scale. Specialists will inspect again all the buildings on the island. By the end of the day, it will be declared a natural disaster zone.

There is no panic in Kefalonia but life is becoming more difficult. The people continue to spend the nights in their cars, in buses and on board ships, in tents and temporary structures of wood and plastic. The weather is not friendly to the victims either, it is cold, rainy and windy on the island.
Today a military cargo aircraft C-130 will supply the victims on the island with chemical toilets, sanitary materials and food. A unit of divers will arrive with the military aircraft too to examine the condition of the seabed around the ports.
Probably, temporary shelters will have to be built for the residents but, since Kefalonia is a tourist island, the construction permit is to be approved by the Ministry of Tourism.

Here is what National Observatory seismologist Vassilis Karastathis tells about it in an interview with Maria S. Topalova.
