A series of terrorist attacks are anticipated at the height of the tourist season

The Greek police is in a state of high alert because of fears of a series of armed attacks and robberies in the coming weeks. According to the authorities, some of the attacks could be carried out in protest against the opening of the prison with the highest level of security in September, as well as to fund the groups that wage "guerrilla war" in the cities.

The police mobilisation is due to several events, as follows: assuming responsibility for the attack on PASOK headquarters by the new organization "Revolutionary Self-Defence", the arson of a diplomat’s car that was carried out by the German "branch" of "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei", dozens of arsons in Greece and another possible attack by terrorists Nikos Maziotis and Christodoulos Xiros. The authorities do not exclude that the next attack could be accomplished by sending a parcel bomb or in an alternative way, as announced by the terrorists themselves after the recent and successful bombing at the police station in Itea. Indicative is the fact that over 60 percent of the police in Athens are engaged in guarding possible targets of terrorists.

The police believe that the organization "Revolutionary Self-Defence" is "another armed group from the Exarcheia neighbourhood with a weak structure, which aims to carry out counter attacks." They recall at the same time that this is the 10th large group that has been recently acting. The other active groups are the following: the "Group of People’s Fighters", "Revolutionary Struggle", "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei", "Military People’s Revolutionary Forces" (that killed two members of Golden Dawn in November 2013), "FAI", "Sect of Revolutionaries", "Zero Tolerance" and "People’s Turn". The members of the latter group carried out the attack on the house of ship owner Nikos Tsakos in the spring of 2013 and had put the bomb in Egaleo underground station two years earlier. The police believe that "at least six of these groups have links with prisoners."

In addition to in Greece, they have members in other countries, as was made clear by the arson of a Greek diplomat’s car in Germany, which was carried out by a fraction of the nihilists of "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei". "Of course, the attack was not carried out by Greeks, who travelled to Berlin to place the bomb. The bombers are members of a branch of the international anarchist unit with local "cores". We must not forget that the Chilean consulate in Hamburg was attacked on 15 March 2014 and that a local anarchist core had announced a few weeks earlier, on the Internet, that it would attack the towers in Nimburg and a new hotel in Berlin. Furthermore, when the arson of a Greek diplomat’s car was carried out in Berlin in April 2014, the responsibility for which was assumed by "Christos Kassimis" core of "Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei", the manifesto of the organization stated that it was carried out ‘in connection with a rebellion at Amigdaleza, a camp located 25 km north of Athens, where the Greek state holds immigrants under arrest’. This demonstrates that the manifesto was written by the German anarchist core," the police state for To Vima newspaper.

In addition, they point out that "over the past two summers there have been a series of robberies of banks in Velestino, Metana, Spetses, Paros and other places. They were carried out by anarchists and the scenario might be repeated this year too." As they state, the most "sensitive" target is the former branches of the Agricultural Bank, where the security measures are very weak.

At the same time, the Greek parliament continued the violent debate on the request of Savas Xiros from the terrorist group "17 November" to be allowed to serve his sentence at his parents' house due to his poor health.

In particular, SYRIZA deputy Vangelis Diamandopoulos, who had caused a stir in the past with quotes from the bloody civil war, provoked the other members by saying, "Two members of SYRIZA appeared as witnesses in his support. The case involves t a man with a 70 percent disability and a lot of health problems, some of which began during his stay in prison. Why? For the constitution and the law consider him a terrorist because he has preferred the armed struggle."

His words provoked a sharp reaction on the part of the members of New Democracy, who were scandalized by the fact that Diamandopoulos does not consider Xiros a terrorist. After the violent debate he remained adamant and added, "Mind what they say, 'terrorists under the law'. Obviously, if we had the right to freely define what a terrorist is, you and a large part of the population of Greece would be absolute terrorists in view of the austerity measures voted by you, the human lives that you have destroyed and everything else that you do.
