Two boats with illegal immigrants, each carrying 60-65 people, have overturned in the waters north of the Greek island of Samos. The Coast Guard Service has been able to rescue 36 people, but two have drowned. The search for another 100 people is still continuing.
The rescue operation is still ongoing and, in addition to the Coast Guard Service, it also involves a Frontex ship, a warship and a helicopter; two fishing boats and volunteer divers are also involved.
The Coast Guard Service stated that the two deceased were women, and the incident happened 4.5 sea miles north of Samos in the area of St. Constantine. One of the bodies was discovered by ADAMORA cruise ship, and the other - by a Coast Guard cutter. According to initial data, the immigrants were boarded on a modern yacht with four captains, followed by a small boat. The cause of the accident is not clear, since the weather in the region was nice, and the winds were not stronger than 5 on the Beaufort scale.
To be continued.
