Although the Greek police have not announced the names of the participants in the criminal drug trafficking network that was broken up last Thursday the Greek media report that the person apprehended as its leader is Efthimios (Makis) Yiannousakis.

During the arrest the authorities questioned his statement that he owned four tankers, as his name does not appear among the members of the local elite of shipping owners. The subsequent investigation showed that Yiannousakis had actually bought four tankers and found a company in Dubai some time ago.

A Greek online edition describes him as "a man of the night, holding shares in a popular bar in the northern suburbs of Athens and very fond of gambling." His father also owned a nightclub, but gradually withdrew from work, and in 2009 he was shot in his new facility by a 26-year-old man who was famous in the nightclubs.

Yiannousakis’ ex-wife Tina Stamatiadi, the daughter of a prominent diamond merchant, and their 15-year-old son were apprehended with him at her house in Filothei suburb.

After questioning the boy on Monday, the authorities released him, having imposed restrictive measures on him. According to sources, the 15-year-old boy had sent a text message from his mobile phone to one of the 11 persons arrested in connection with the case.

Among them is an Albanian citizen who was apprehended the day after the police operation. He will testify on Friday whereas the five Greeks involved in the network, namely 40-year-old Yiannousakis, his ex-wife, one of her friends and the housekeeper will testify on Tuesday. The five Turkish citizens will appear before the prosecutor on Wednesday.

Sources from the police department of the Coast Guard said it was not Yiannousakis who managed the network but one of the Turkish citizens. On Sunday, the investigating bodies found in a garage in Keratsini a truck with secret compartments, which was used to transport heroin from Patras to Ancona and, from there, to the drug markets in Central and Western Europe.

The same sources state that the amount of heroin found, which is worth around 30 million euro, was probably brought to Greece from Iran through Turkey in another truck.
