According to satellite photos from the European Information System for forest fires 21 200 hectares have been burnt in Attica. "The fire was handled after everything was burnt," says the subheading of Ethnos newspaper.

"The wind is on the side of the bad guys," exclaims an old woman. Fortunately the wind decreased and the wildfires were handled and since this morning there were no announcements of new fires. According to a representative from the fire department, the perimeter of the burnt regions has increased. Yesterday the most problematic regions were Kalitehnoupoli and Dioni towards Pikermi.
The fire in Dionisos region, which is right next to the airport and was burning yesterday morning, has been put out. Yesterday the monks from Saint Ephraim monastery in Nea Makri were evacuated and the flames were storming few steps away from the houses.
In Porto Germano, where yesterday the situation was the worst, the fire was handled thanks to the helicopters, because due to the strong wind the airplanes could not throw water. There are 400 houses in the region, whose citizens ran away to the beach and if the situation turned for the worst their plan was to jump in the water. Finally, four houses, animals and yards were burnt.
The Emergency Fund will allot €61 million for the repair and reconstruction of houses in northeast Attica. The Fund was created in order to collect and distribute money, which were initially collected two years ago during the devastating fires in Peloponnese and Euboea.
The initial capital of the Fund was €205 million, out of which €198 million were collected from a total of 92 000 people. The money is intended for the restoration of 1 079 houses, which burnt in the 2007 fires. This Fund will not finance the forestation of the burnt forests. But the money which will go for the restoration of the recently burnt houses will be more than enough, because according to a statement by the government spokesman Evangelos Andonaros, based on primary data the burnt houses are not that many.
Education minister Aris Spiliotopoulos said that the schools in the burnt regions will be examined in order to ensure that the buildings are safe.
Athens mayor Nikos Kaklamanis gave the summer camps in Athens at the disposal of Leonidas Kouris, governor of East Attica, in order for 300 people to be sheltered, whose homes were burnt.
