More than 60 shell casings from Kalashnikovs were found early this morning in front of the residence of the German Ambassador in Athens Wolfgang Dold. The shots were heard around 3:30 a.m. tonight on "National Resistance" Street in the northern suburb of Halandri. There are no casualties or injured.
The investigation has been undertaken by the anti-terrorism service. The district has been closed off by numerous police forces, and experts are gathering evidence. Six suspects have been detained but there is no evidence that they have anything to do with the shooting.
According to the security of the residence, the number of perpetrators was four; they fired at the wall of the residence without targeting the police guards. After that they escaped through the neighbouring streets.
This is the second attack on the residence of the German Ambassador in Athens. In 1999, the organization "17 November" fired a rocket at the building, which hit the roof. Drops of blood were discovered on the rocket, which subsequently proved to be valuable evidence against members of the organization.
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias have already talked with Ambassador Wolfgang Dold on the phone.
