The extraordinary forecast of the National Weather Service of Greece informs of rapid weather deterioration that will start this evening.
In particular, the forecast provides for the following:
- Tonight, Monday (05 January 2015), there will be heavy snowfall in eastern continental Greece (mainly in Attica and Boeotia), on the Sporadic Islands, the Cycladic Islands as well as on the islands of Evia and Crete. It will continue to snow tomorrow, Tuesday (06 January 2015) as well, whereas the phenomenon will gradually subside on Wednesday afternoon (07 January 2015).
- Today (05 January 2015), it will continue to snow in Attica, in the mountainous and hilly areas of the region (at an altitude of 200-300 metres). On Tuesday, the snowfall will intensify mainly in the northern and eastern part of the area. It will snow in places in the northern suburbs of Athens, and in the city centre at times. On Wednesday afternoon, the snowfall will gradually stop.
- Temperatures will be particularly low over the next three days, mainly in the central and northern parts of Greece (minimum temperatures will range from -25 to -10 degrees Celsius).
Chrisoula Petrou, head of the Forecasts Department of the National Weather Service said that it has already started to rain in the lowlands and to snow on the mountains in central and eastern continental Greece, on Evia, in the Peloponnese, on the Cycladic Islands and Crete. As for Attica, Chrisoula Petrou said that "it is now raining there and snowing on the adjacent mountains. It will start to snow in the hilly areas tonight and in the lowlands tomorrow. It is possible that it may snow even in Athens tomorrow afternoon."
On Mount Parnitha, about 30 km northwest of Athens, the circulation of vehicles from the lift to the casino has been stopped and it is difficult in many other places across the country. Weather conditions will deteriorate tomorrow in eastern continental Greece, Attica, Evia, on the Sporadic Islands, the Cycladic Islands and Crete and it is expected that it will snow in the coastal areas too. Precipitation is forecasted to gradually subside on Wednesday afternoon but it will remain quite cold.
According to Chrisoula Petrou, temperatures over the next three days will be very low and it will be particularly cold in central and northern Greece whereas in places, thermometers will show temperatures below zero throughout the day.
